Thoracic Mobility Matters

“Life is lived in movement. Get adjusted”

At BeWell Chiropractic in Tigard, we sometimes see patients who underestimate the impact of thoracic mobility. Most people focus on the neck or lower back when pain hits, but thoracic mobility matters and is crucial for overall spinal health, posture, and vitality.

In this feature, we’ll lay out why your thoracic spine matters, the risks of neglect and practical ways to maintain mobility and strength.

What Is the Thoracic Spine?

The thoracic spine is the middle 12 bones of the skeleton between the neck and lower back. It allows forward and backward bending and is naturally more rigid with ribs attached. It’s designed to protect vital organs like the heart and lungs.

Because of this increased rigidity, many people develop stiffness in the mid-back, which can lead to poor posture, shoulder problems and even neck or lower back pain. The thoracic spine is also the home of the sympathetic nervous system. The part that controls the body’s “fight-or-flight” response during stress. It boosts heart rate, blood pressure, and breathing while increasing blood flow to muscles and dilating pupils for enhanced alertness.

Can you understand that problems in the mid back could keep a person in a stressed state of constant fight-or-flight? They will likely sleep poorly, have digestive problems and elevated blood pressure! This person is a mess.

Why Mid-Back Mobility Matters

A strong and mobile mid-back allows your body to move freely and absorb forces safely. This is the lifeline to your spine. Movement here equals vitality. Limited mobility in the mid-back often creates compensations. Neck pain is sure to start when your upper back is stiff because your neck has to work overtime. Shoulder issues soon follow contributing to impingements or rotator cuff injuries. Sooner or later, the low back will ALWAYS start to complain.

The Role of Flexibility

Flexibility in the thoracic spine isn’t just about doing a backbend. Life comes at us from all directions and the thoracic spine needs to rotate, flex / extend and bend sideways. Proper mobility improves breathing efficiency. It helps golfers swing, tennis and baseball players increase ball speed and runners enhance rotational mechanics and reduce stress on the neck and low back. This is MASSIVE!

Without this flexibility, small movements become stiff and inefficient, increasing the risk of injuries over time and lowering one’s vitality.

Strength Matters Too

While mobility is critical, the thoracic spine also needs strength and stability to support the upper back and shoulders. A strong back supports proper posture. Strong spinal muscles keep you upright and prevent hunching. A strong and stable mid back distributes loads properly through the low back. Keep in mind strength exercises don’t need memberships and heavy weights. Band pull-aparts, thoracic extensions or bodyweight rows can work wonders. (YouTube is great for this.)

Common Causes of Thoracic Issues

Many patients at BeWell Chiropractic in Tigard develop thoracic stiffness due to lifestyle factors. Desk jobs or long drives can lock the mid-back in a rounded position. Slouching, hunching over phones, tablets or laptops are HUGE contributors.

Your thoracic spine needs attention when you notice difficulty twisting the upper body. Rounded shoulders with the forward head and tightness through the shoulders. A sharp, stabbing pain worse when breathing is classic symptoms of a stuck rib. If you notice these signs, early intervention can prevent further problems and put a spring back in your step. Get adjusted!

How Chiropractic Care Helps Mid-Back Mobility

At BeWell Chiropractic in Tigard, we excel in assessing and restoring thoracic spine mobility. Chiropractic adjustments, combined with soft tissue therapy is key to improving range of motion, correcting postural changes and unwind the “fight-or-flight” system. Many patients experience noticeable improvements after just a few sessions, especially when combined with targeted exercises.

Exercises to Improve Mobility and Strength

A foam roller is the cheapest and most effective trick. (I do it every night!)  On the floor with the head over the roller, use your feet to push toward the head causing the roller to roll down the spine. Linger on areas that are stiff. Move away from areas that hurt.

Adjust your workstation. Monitors at eye level or slightly higher. Get a quality chair that allows the shoulders to relax ($100 chair is NOT a quality chair), stretch and move frequently!

When to Seek Professional Care

If stiffness persists or 3 days of sharp, stabbing pain worse on breathing… its time to consult a professional. At BeWell Chiropractic in Tigard, we are experts in spinal assessment and precision chiropractic adjustments. Early care can prevent minor stiffness from turning into postural problems and a chronic situation.
