Start Your Fitness After 50

If not now, when?

Starting a fitness program after 50 can feel intimidating. Most people just can’t get off the couch. Many worry about past injuries, lack of energy, or simply not knowing where to begin. You know you need to but maybe the motivation is lacking.

Keep in mind that at this stage of life, the goal of fitness is not punishment or competition. Your fitness is about moving the needle just a bit toward better mobility, strength and balance. Your fitness is about carrying groceries from the car, hauling laundry to the machine, reaching into the cupboards and being able to stand up easily from your recliner.

Just look around! How many people do you see who have trouble with these simple activities?  At BeWell Chiropractic in Tigard, we work with adults who want to move more but don’t want to get hurt. Here’s how to start a fitness program safely, effectively, and realistically.

Fitness After 50 Is Important

You already know the body naturally loses muscle mass, joint mobility, and balance if those systems are not challenged regularly. This process isn’t inevitable. It’s modifiable!

Regular movement after 50 has been shown to… blah blah blah. You already know! The key is to START!

Consistency Beats Intensity

One of the biggest obstacles most face is making the decision to start. It seems like fighting that voice in your head to stay on the warm couch in front of the TV is the biggest issue. What is it that makes a person do uncomfortable things? Having friends suffer cardiovascular events, watching Type II insulin injections, seeing handfuls of medications taken and watching a parent grow feeble did it for me.

Starting a fitness program low and slow is fine. Just do it! Find something you will do and be consistent at it. Small actions done consistently will change your world. A fitness routine you can maintain consistently will always outperform an aggressive plan that leads to pain or burnout. Just start something!

For me, pushing heavy weights at Golds Gym was not the answer. Pounding miles of pavement just didn’t work for me. Flipping tractor tires at CrossFit got old. Then I found sauna exercise at HotWorx. It suited my needs well and I’ve have been consistent for well over a year.

Get Cleared and Address Existing Issues First

Maybe you have prior injuries that limit your activity. Joint restrictions and chronic posture strain can limit movement and increase re-injury. Address it and get moving!

At BeWell Chiropractic in Tigard, we often recommend addressing spinal mobility and joint function first. When your body moves the way it’s intended to, exercise becomes safer and more effective.

The Best Place to Start: Walking

Walking is one of the most underrated forms of exercise. It’s easy, safe and cheap! Start with 10 – 15 minutes per day and gradually increase duration and pace. Even short walks taken consistently can lead to meaningful improvements in energy and joint health.

Strength Training: Protecting Muscles and Joints as You Age

Strength training is essential after 50. I’m not talking Arnold Schwarzenegger stuff. Easy, body-weight activities are sufficient. You already know what to do. Only you can make it happen.

Do hard things! Pull off some chair squats and a few push-ups. Every rep is one step closer to getting off meds, dropping unnecessary weight and building the person you know you can be. Focus on controlled movements and proper form. Focus on YOU!

Mobility vs Flexibility

You might confuse stretching with mobility. Mobility focuses on controlled movement through a joint’s full range, which is critical after 50. Simple mobility practices can include gentle spinal movements, hip and shoulder circles and controlled range-of-motion exercises. Life is not linear. Life is lived in rotation. Improving mobility often reduces stiffness and pain, making other forms of exercise more enjoyable and effective.

Balance Training

Balance naturally declines with age, but it can be improved at any stage. Easy balance exercises include standing on one leg near a wall or chair, heel-to-toe walking and slow, controlled movements. To improve balance, it must be repeatedly challenged. Just a few minutes of balance work per day can significantly reduce fall risk and improve confidence in daily activities.
